The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) is a series of challenging, nationally recognized mathematics competitions organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It is designed for middle and high school students to develop problem-solving skills and foster a love for mathematics. The AMC serves as the first step towards qualifying for the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and ultimately the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Students compete at different levels — AMC 8 (Grade 8 and below), AMC 10 (Grade 10 and below), and AMC 12 (Grade 12 and below).
Purpose and Goals
- Cultivate Mathematical Talent:The AMC aims to identify and foster mathematical talent in students through challenging problem-solving experiences.
- Enhance Problem-Solving Skills:The competitions encourage critical thinking, logical reasoning, and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
- Prepare for Advanced Studies:The exams serve as a stepping stone for students pursuing higher education and careers in STEM fields.
Levels of Competition
The AMC program includes three different competitions, each designed for a specific grade level:
- AMC 8:For students in grade 8 and below.
- AMC 10:For students in grade 10 and below.
- AMC 12:For students in grade 12 and below.
Pathway to Higher Competitions
- High-achieving students on the AMC 10 and AMC 12 are invited to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a more difficult competition.
- Exceptional performance in the AIME can lead to invitations to the U.S. Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) or the U.S. Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO).
- Success in these national contests is crucial for selection to the U.S. team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
